Making lists is hard. A lot of people only see the numbers and the names and don’t think about the effort and agonizing that takes place to make them. It’s especially hard when confronting a daunting task like picking 50 names to be considered the best battle rappers of all time. There’s so much ground to cover that it’s almost too intimidating to approach. But we at LTBR tried our hand at it and what we present to you all today is our staff top 50 list.

Criterias are difficult to pinpoint in such a subjective form of entertainment, but what we came down to for what should constitute someone as one of the best battle rappers ever is:

  • Popularity (view count, million view battles, etc)

  • Resume (the number of respectable names and all-time greats they have faced)

  • Impact (what lasting impression they’ve made on the culture of battle rap)

  • Influence (how did they shape how battle as we know it changed and evolved)

Honorable mention to names that have outstanding careers and have reached high peaks, acquired accomplishments, are a part of history, have massive numbers on YouTube, or have had impactful wins that certainly could’ve been considered for this. Names like Real Deal, E Ness, Gattas, Quest Mcody. A few names that haven’t dried their ink yet but have a massive trajectory or impact like Chess, Eazy The Block Captain, A.ward are names that can very well make this list in years or when it’s all said and done.

This took a lot of time and effort to put together so without further ado, we present the LTBR top 50 battle rappers of all time.

This list is in No order and not ranked.

Aye Verb

The man you love to hate. The first villain in battle rap that led the charge in the Midwest Movement. Aye Verb’s legacy has been cemented with one of the best resumes in battle rap history. You can say his career alone would be fitting for a Hollywood movie. From the earlier days of Grind Time and Fight Klub, Verb proved to the world that the Midwest was nice in this battle rap art form. Cult fans who followed the sport for years can cite his battle vs SB on URL and his  “Guardian Angels” bar turned heads. He would go on to battle giants from Charlie Clips, K Shine, Math Hoffa, and others on the East Coast throughout his reign. He has one of the biggest moments under his belt versus St. Louis brother Hitman Holla with the “Hey Big Gerald…that’s how you talk to your son!” His multiple redemption stories, bouncing back from tough losses against X-Factor, Charlie Clips, and K Shine, showcase his warrior spirit and motivation to never lay down. You can give him credit for being one of the first battle rappers to show how important evolution is as a battler through his transformation as Captain Marketable, Verb Von Doom, and the infamous, Vegan Verb. His resume is now the blueprint battlers want to duplicate – which includes “end-game” battles with the goats Loaded Lux and Murda  Mook. Win, lose, or draw, he has brought the best out of the culture, his opponents, and the Midwest.

Arsonal

One of the most legendary battlers of the last decade and a half, “The King of Disrespect” Arsonal represents peak longevity and has one of the most complete careers of all time to show for it. Coming out of Newark, New Jersey, with verses full of insults, bars, and cadences – Arsonal came to fame in Grind Time, where the short rounds worked favorably against other future battle rap legends and recognized names in Hollow Da Don,  Heartless, and Okwerdz. At URL and KOTD, Arsonal cemented himself as a main event star challenging legends & testing up-and-comers alike. His blockbuster battles vs Mistah Fab and Cassidy give his status of legend another layer, being one of the few legends with multi-main artist battles on their resume. In terms of impact and pushing the culture forward, Arsonal is one of the very few battlers with over 100+ million views, with multi-million-view battles on a plethora of leagues he’s stepped on, and even founding his notable league with UW (now UDubb) in 2012 which hosted plenty of legendary battles and moments (Lux vs Hollow, Calicoe vs ORed, Hitman vs Suge, Arsonal vs Lux, etc). Most of by far the most iconic figures in Battle Rap History, the story of battle rap could not possibly be told without talking about Arsonal Da Rebel, multiple times at that.

Ave

One of the best punchers in battle rap history, Ave has a career amongst the greats that’s built nearly solely off his work and bar quality. Ave has consistently rocked stages all while being one of few artists to hold down VA in the Battle Rap scene.  Starting out working in the trenches in the competitive Virginia Scene, once Ave joined URL it was clear he was headed for stardom with a legendary run of breakout showings against Nunn Nunn and Mike P. Rum Nitty vs. Ave is regarded as one of the greatest battles of all time, ushering in a new era of barfest that highlighted punching back to back and creating and an abundance of quoteables.

B-Magic

St. Louis is one of the most important cities in battle rap.  In the shadow of stars like Nelly, St. Louis was not viewed as a beacon of lyricism by the time B-Magic entered battle rap. He changed that. With revolutionary punchlines and a timeless flow, Magic filed in as one of the all-time great punchers in battle rap – B-Magic’s showings against Qleen Paper, JC, Lynx Montana, and M Ciddy made him one of the most feared MCs on the come-up.  By the time he made his major stage debut against Charlie Clips, the world was already in tune. “Best of B-Magic” on  YouTube serves as a master class of rapid-fire punching, filthy cadences, and 4/8 bar set-ups to haymakers. B-Magic created a new standard for punchlines and at one point held the puncher crown. With this overall upgrade to the standard of bars culture-wide and having such a pivotal and memorable peak it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a writer that was not influenced by B-Muthafuckin-Magic.

Bigg K

The dog strikes again, coming out of Norfolk Virginia Bigg K has been a relentless force that moves to the beat of his drum for the entirety of his career. One of the most Prolific punchers wrapped up with one of the most rhythmic flows we have ever seen. Bigg K presents himself as a fearless force and a fierce competitor and has been a staple emcee on  KOTD & RBE with an extensive resume the features not exclusive to names like Aye Verb, head ice, conceited, Calicoe,  Arsonal, iron Solomon, Geechi Gotti, Ill will, shotgun Suge, Illmac, TheSaurus. Just to name a few, ever heard of these names? Oh, they are just some of the 50 greatest battle rappers of all time. No big deal. One of his most notable performances was his first round against Ah-Di Boom In 2020, where he revealed paperwork that showed  Ah-Di boom snitched on their codefendant. This round was heard around the world and made such an impact that this single-handedly won two awards at the same time, Body of the year and Moment of the Year.

Big T

Chicago Battle Rap Legend aka “Mr. Chalaka-boo” has laid an imprint for what Chicago Battle Rap means and was the star the Midwest needed at a pivotal point in the culture. Big T first made their presence felt as the Headliner for the Lionz  Den first Midwest event, Detroit vs Chicago. And was featured on the first two URL events, where he displayed his dominance and showed the world what he was capable of. Big T was one of the forefathers and spearheads of the  Midwest Movement which included the coalition of Saint Louis, Chicago & Detroit to take over battle rap. Big T would come to New York multiple times to battle New York emcees and leave victorious. Big T brought such an unorthodox and unique style to battle rap. He was able to move at his own pace, slow down the tempo, and dictate the pace of battles. He was witty but layered so you may be able to listen to some of his material from over a decade ago and still find hidden gems in it. Big T was one of the first battlers to really implement sound effects and animations that enhanced the gravity of how his performances were received. In 2012, he received a co-sign from 50 Cent, as one of  50’s favorite battle rappers, and during his peak years he battled on various platforms and also put on historic performances as a headliner on KOTD while simultaneously still making consecutive appearances on URL’s Night of Main  Events. You can’t talk about the Midwest Movement without mentioning Big T.

Bill Collector

With an animated style defined by performance, comedy, and lyricism – Bill creates a unique and good matchup with nearly any style he goes against. From the Streets to the Dorm rooms, Bill’s all-around approach is appreciated by all corners of battle rap.  In what many would consider the greatest PG class in URL history bringing in  JC, Rosenberg Raw, Qleen Paper, John John  Da Don, B-Magic and Chilla Jones – Bill Collector stood out as the wildcard performer who could neutralize cliché bars and street talk with a comedic approach that subtly communicated the quality of his craft. As Bill Collector matured, so did his approach, with a style now highlighting dense writing and surgical cadences that has ushered in a new chapter of his career and lives up to his nickname “Devil Bar Bill”. His classic grudge match with Hitman and PG classic vs. Qleen Paper is a testament to his versatility and longevity, delivering career highs showing years apart. A master of reinvention, his 2022 victory in the prestigious KOTD Season 1 Tournament, where his work against heralded MCs like Passwords, Mackk Myron, and Madflex earned him $100k – shows that anywhere he goes Bill can compete with the best of the best.

Calicoe

Many might not know or remember how young Calicoe was when he first started getting traction in battle rap outside the Detroit scene. Cal was a young man fighting grown men. His slogan “There is a difference between metaphors and real rap,” brought believability into the sport. His importance in the Midwest Movement and knocking off some of the  East Coast’s best landed him in the culture’s spotlight. Caught the first body bag versus Math Hoffa, who at that time was the scariest battler out on the East Coast, on Summer Madness 1. One of the first to go in the gauntlet with battle rap’s God Loaded Lux on Summer Madness 2. Brought the most respected URL to Detroit for the Motor City Mayhem card which gave us classic moments when he battled Arsonal. He is among the top 10 in views worldwide. He has gone to war with giants from Tsu Surf (free the Wave), Hitman Holla, Yung Ill, Aye Verb, Tay Roc, Arsonal, Pat Stay, etc. He ripped through Dot  Mob, New Jersey’s best, and bar none one of the best stage presences. God has blessed us battle fans with Marv  One, Quest McCody, X-Factor, and Midwest Miles, and Calicoe still has carried Michigan on his back when it comes to its own battle rap culture and place in the Midwest.

Charlie Clips

The Harlem entertainer with a personality larger than life – Charlie Clips’ run-in battle rap is difficult to put into words. His rise to prominence starts in New York’s Lionz Den, where his battle (or real assault) against future all-time great Tay Roc would set WorldstarHipHop and YouTube on fire. With a sharp wit, easy-to-understand rhymes, and a style that made fans feel as if they’ve known him forever – Charlie Clips rules the 2010s with one of the best collections of clear, top-tier-level wins you will find in battle rap history. “Clips  3-0” became one of the earliest battle rap memes among fans as Charlie Clips stacked up dominant wins against residents of battle rap Mt. Olympus on a card-to-card basis– including T-Rex, Aye Verb, and Tsu Surf. His talents have also taken him out of battle rap into the mainstream audiences where his critically acclaimed work on MTVs Wild N’ Out showcased the gifts that battle rap fans were already familiar with. Now, an over 15+ year vet, Clips gives back to the culture by battling the up-and-coming competition, participating in the acclaimed Kings vs. Queens Series, and giving every crowd a show, no matter the level of performance. Fans will often ask, “If you wanted to introduce someone to battle rap what is the first battle you would show them?” with a style that shows the peaks of battle rap while also being appreciated by new and old fans alike, Clips is almost always the answer to that question.

Charron

One of the most renowned and world-class battle rappers to ever touch the stage, Charron has made his presence felt in multiple countries as he is tied for the record for most million-view battles in multiple countries alongside Dizaster. Charron has been around throughout multiple eras and you can see him battle on Grindtime during the time he was still considered a mid-tier. As time progressed he progressed as a battler and as a freestyler to the point you can argue he is one of the best in that department to ever do it. Best known for winning his freestyle Friday competition on BET, his breakout performances against Arsonal & DNA, and an outstanding URL debut in 2014, he became a force to be reckoned with and has reached a high level of mainstream success as a cast member for 7 seasons of Nick Cannon’s  Wild-N-Out. In most recent memory his back-and-forth freestyle round vs Chef Trez was nominated as one of the best battles of the year in 2020.

Chilla Jones

Boston Native, Chilla Jones’s road to legendary status is as earned as you’ll find and is molded by being one of the best pens in battle rap history. An innovator, Chilla Jones took the esoteric concept of “scheming” from witty word association to a full-on plan of attack, where nearly any category of things known to man was formed into a verbal attack. His battle versus JC changed the game and the overall level of writing as a new era of battlers honed their skills in the small rooms in the immense shadow of Summer Madness – with a greater focus on bars over performance or any other traits of battle rap besides the pen and paper. Maybe the most impressive of his accomplishments, Chilla found himself being the only battler to hold the KOTD Chain and win the prestigious COTY award, winning these in back-to-back years. Whether you agree with Chilla as the best writer or not, you don’t get the name “KingPen” for no reason.

Conceited

Straight outta Brooklyn, Conceited is the most successful battle rapper to ever have touched the mainstream. Most notably his career began battling in what is called “The Jungle” in the battle rap circuit out in the west where Conceded put on outstanding performances with his most notable performance against Tiger Ty. Conceited was a part of the infamous acre S.O.N.S, which has 4 members, Quantum Physics, Heartless, and J Fox. This Rap crew was wildly respected for their wordplay abilities and creative punchlines. Conceited discovered ways to bring impact to double entendres like we haven’t seen before in battle rap. Conceited continues to establish his name and gain some more respect as he is featured on the Lionz Den and has most of his prolific battles during the Grind Time era. His dominant victory over battle rap legend Illmac is regarded as one of the biggest bodies to ever live.

And it was the first time anyone had ever defeated Illmac to this capacity. Conceited then has one of the greatest battles of all time against  Arsenal which was an Internet sensation and went viral during battle raps formative years. A 5 part video of a dynamic and competitive battle that shaped both of their careers. Conceited rose to the ranks on URL with countless performances and an all-time battle against Tsu Surf. And he is coined as one of the greatest punch liners in battle rap history. Where he created some of the best slogans and setups for the way he would break down his wordplay in battle rap. A few years removed – Con returned to battle rap for an all-time battle against B-Magic, someone who was challenging his title as the “greatest puncher of all time”. And they go to war on Summer Madness 4 and it was a  beautiful moment of the torch being passed down. To this day people still want to see Conceited return to the ring for the legendary milestones he was able to accomplish during his tenure of being active.

Cortez

Brooklyn native and the most accomplished Latino battle rapper, Cortez has been the embodiment of kicking down doors for the culture. Cortez has seen multiple eras and has footage as far back as 2006 on the internet of him winning battle rap tournaments in the Streets. Cortez has been through multiple eras from Street battles, to Fight Klub, to Lionz Denz, Grind Time, URL, RBE, and on. Cortez set the world on fire during his run in the Grind Time Era and alongside his infamous battle vs Head Ice that led to one of the most controversial outcomes in Battle rap history forever altering the landscape of judge battles. During his Head Ice battle, Hip-hop legends such as Raekwon, Styles P, Big Daddy Kane, and KRS One were the judges and they came to a unanimous decision to give Ice the battle, which was widely frowned upon and began to create the gap between the way battle rap started to evolve in one direction and slowly become its world.

This is perceived as one of the biggest robberies in history. Cortez used all of the momentum from that battle to continue to build his career and was featured on the first URL Card. Legendary KOTD cards have been a headliner for both leagues multiple times. He had a peak year in 2017 where he ranked #5 on all Top Battle Rapper of the Year lists, most notably Champion Of The Year. As a Puerto Rican from New York, a Nuyo-Rican if you will, he was able to open the doors for many more Latino battlers across the country to pursue their talents and be recognized as a force. He became a league owner of Tiers over Tears Battle league, where he gave back opportunities to up-and-comers. These days Cortez is still a force to be reckoned with, using his brand recognition and talent to pursue opportunities in acting & music, where his collaborations include legends like Method Man on critically acclaimed projects like Resolutions 1 and 2. Inspiring, hard-working, and damn good at rapping – Cortez’s legacy cannot be denied.

Danny Myers

From Las Vegas by way of Los Angeles, Danny Myers has a work ethic that if I just told you about it may not even seem real. His rise is highlighted by a career that began in the 90s – before the cameras, battling against MCs from coast to coast in nearly any location. A key piece in the resurgent West Coast battle rap scene, his influential battles against Rum Nitty, Dre Vishiss,  Westcoast Dread, B Dot, and Geechi Gotti served as a warning to the rest of the culture on what was to come. Myers’ reputation for battling on any platforms no matter the size or stature has gained him a cult following of hardcore fans with one common ethos, “you don’t duck any smoke”. An annual Top 20 finalist for Champion of the Year, Danny Myers is responsible for adding to the battle rap lexicon with terms such as “parallel universe” constantly being referenced by his peers. Danny’s legacy will be defined by his super-human work ethic, genuine love for the sport, and ability to get crazy in any scenario. Whether he’s battling at a park in LA or a 3k capacity arena – Danny Myers always contributes endless and extreme energy, creativity, and bars. The Bar God truly is a legend everywhere he goes and is one of the best talents this sport has had to offer us.

Daylyt

There is no set pathway to greatness in battle rap, with all types of different ways to cement your name in the books. Some use only bars, some big stage moments, and others get there by controversy. And in the rare instance, you get a combo of all 3, which is where you find Daylyt’s legendary and bizarre career within battle rap. Daylyt’s signature Spawn Tattoo signifies a rebellion against the conventional norms of the culture while serving as a symbol for a truly gifted MC. From chain-punching to one-line punches, from picaresque street tales to schemes that at times are round long – simply put; Daylyt can do everything lyrically. His classic work against Charlie Clips, Lotta Zay, Mike P, and Ill Will is notable as all of them emphasize his complex and “rewind and find” ability, hidden references, and double meanings behind some of the best writing in battle rap history. The term “antic” is divisive in battle rap. Some claim it distracts from the art, while others believe it brings interest to battle rap for casual fans. Daylyt served as an agent of chaos – delivering elite writing while giving some of the biggest examples of shock value in battle rap. Whether you remember his name for his greatness or infamy, his body of work speaks for itself and he is unquestionably one of the most polarizing and iconic figures in the game.

DNA

Out of Corona Queens DNA is one of the most legendary battle rappers in the world and has been featured on ESPN  BET Lifetime Funk Flex and much more. This is a battle rapper who has been trying to send them through multiple areas during his youthful years at the tail end of the freestyle era and the start of the grind time era, he was the youngest in the circuit making strides toward his name. The event crossed over to URL and became a perennial battle rapper who was on Consecutive main-stage cards. He took his talents all across the country to various leagues like KOTD, Don’t Flop, RBE. Has one of the most legendary battles with  Dizaster. He then continues to rebrand himself as he ventures out to battle on multiple platforms like Don’t Flop and more and unifies with K Shine to partner up and create the NWX crew which began to transition battle rap in a new direction because battle rap 21 twos was a very popular format in the freestyle era but never really made as much traffic or waves in the modern era. Shine brings his dynamic to want to stay at the table with DNA and they go on the road all over the country battling famous 2on2 teams to the point where smack URL decided to start having  2on2 events in case Shine and DNA are the first 2on2 battle to ever be on a summer madness card. DNA has 150+  battles cataloged. 2nd most all time has won live national battles on BET 2x, is on the board with multiple headliners on multiple platforms, and is now in Media and has a wrestling Podcast called Attitude Era that has made strides within the world of Wrestling.

40 BARRS

In a male-dominated sport, women who rise to the challenge of stepping into the ring must possess supreme confidence, raw skill, and brand awareness. These are qualities that define 40 BARRS. As the name would indicate, her focus has always been to bring a level of sophistication to battle rap normally reserved for other genres. With one of the most rabid fan bases in battle rap (Team 40), 40 BAARS must be applauded as one of the greatest ever. Since her emergence at Queen of the Ring, 40 BARRS has raised the standard for lyricism in women’s battle rap, scheming and angling her way to one of the most well-written catalogs across all of battle rap. She also normalized taking and winning intergender battles, having possibly the most impressive collection of male vs female battles of any female legend. Geechi Gotti

From Compton California, the three-time champion of the year Geechi Gotti has created a historic career for himself and just spent five years. In 2017 he graduated from the URL proving grounds system and made it onto the main stage and from there he never looked back. In four years he’s battled 60+ times and has been averaging one battle per month in the course of these four years which is a testament to how hard his work ethic is and more importantly how insanely consistent he’s been able to be within that span. Battling in that volume is already a difficult assignment let alone the fact you consider he is battling the most elite competitors in the world in 2018 when he acquired his first title all of his battles were on the road and he was consistently having the best performance of the night on all the cards he was featured on and he ends his run with becoming a URL headliner back to back. In 2019 the level of competition goes up in that year he battles names like Tsu Surf, Tay Roc, Chess, K-Shine, DNA, Head Ice, Bigg K, O Red, Big T, Arsonal, Ill will, John John Da Don.

That résumé in one year alone is probably enough to make somebody a Hall of Famer keep in mind he’s having some of the best performance rounds and battles of the nights amongst all of those names and isn’t losing any of these battles, of course, everything can be argued battle rap subjective but the battle in the frequency that he does, while not losing a step or losing clearly, was unheard of a  president and quite frankly my never be matched again he security second title this year becoming the first back to back champion of the year. In the year 2020, Geechi Gotti decided to evolve as a brand as he continues to compete at a very high level against more elite competitors but now is opening the floodgates with multiple ventures where he has his cannabis strain he has his podcast, his clothing line he’s still putting out albums in the middle of all of this and he has become biggest workhorse you can ever find. In 2021 Geechi Gotti decides to go on yet another run where he battles multiple legends like Math Hoffa, Calicoe, and DNA again and it’s also cemented in the history books as he wins the ultimate Madness three tournaments.

His run in this tournament was one of the most dominant tournament runs we’ve ever seen and it ended in a grand final with a Rum Nitty rematch where they split 100,000 prize money. He proceeded to end the year with a clear victory over Loaded Lux on “Till Death Do Us Part”, a URL card that was created and hosted by Drake. And ends his run with an A.Ward rematch to secure his third title in 4 years. From 2018 to now Geechi Gotti has given you at least one bottle of the year contender, one round of the year contender, and one of the best performances of the year while relentlessly being face-to-face with difficult dangerous in elite competition a  run that is unmatched. And a hall-of-fame career manifesting before our eyes.

JC

Starting his rise to fame at Mic Murdaraz in his hometown, JC’s approach to battle rap is defined by a surgical delivery and pen heavy style that is known for making his material age better with every watch. His sheer dominance in the indie leagues across the country led to an incredible streak of victories. His classic battle against Chilla Jones changed the course of battle rap – inspiring a whole era of new lyricists and more focus on bar quality and complexity. With classic work, bodybags, and standout moments (big stage and small) across all 3 major leagues in battle rap: KOTD, URL, and RBE – JC remains one of the most well-traveled and universally respected MCs there is. Being an absolute monster on the small stage was not enough for the ambitious MC – who refined his style for the big stage collecting a series of clear W’s against Rum Nitty, Chef Trez, and Chess en route to becoming a prominent mainstay on the staple big cards for URL. The path to respect was fully realized in 2022 as JC won the prestigious Ultimate Madness 5 tournament, taking home $120k in the process. With a legendary pen, quotable for days, and a resume packed with more wins than some people have battled- JC remains one of the standards for lyricism, forcing MCs to step their pen to even be competitive in front of him.

K Shine

Another Harlem legend cut from the unique and special Dot Mobb cloth. He Rises through the ranks to become an all-time great battle rapper, one of the highest-viewed battle rappers, and most importantly one of if not the greatest performer of all time. he came into the league as one of the younger talents alongside names like Tsu Surf, DNA, Calicoe, Tay Roc, and others and he made career benchmarks as he consistently created dynamic moments on the stages they would live on forever. From 2011 to 2015  Shine had at least one moment in each of those years that could easily be the moment of the year between his first round against Tsu Surf, his infamous Is he dead kick, to Professor Shine, his Michael  Jackson scheme, or most importantly his debuted at Irving Plaza which features to be one of his most dominant performances of his career that solidified his status against aye verb.

He then continues to rebrand himself as he ventures out to battle on multiple platforms like King of the Dot, Don’t Flop, and more and unifies with DNA to partner up and create the NWX crew which began to transcend son battle rap in a new direction because battle rap 21 twos was a very popular format in the freestyle era but never really made as much traffic or waves in the modern era. Shine brings his dynamic to want to stay at the table with DNA and they go on the road all over the country battling famous 2on2 teams to the point where smack URL decided to start having 2on2 events in case Shine and DNA are the first 2on2 battle to ever be on a summer madness card.

At this point in time, K Shine has made a Hall of Fame career for himself twice but it continues when he goes on a historic run from 2018 through 2020. This was arguably the most dominant run of his career where every single year he is in contention to be a champion of the year. He falls short of the goal each year. He  ranked #3 in 2018, #4 in 2019, & #2 in 2020. This is very similar to always being in the MVP race of any sport and while you may fall short of actually winning the award, it cannot go on recognizing that being in contention for perennial years is an extreme accomplishment. K Shine is the fifth highest viewed battle  rapper in the world and has checked off all boxes in all areas across all platforms all over the country

Loaded Lux

From Harlem to 106 and Park to the legendary performance at Summer Madness 2 – Loaded  Lux’s contributions to battle rap is damn near battle rap itself. The epic battle vs. Murda Mook served as a Golden Age standout classic for an emerging sport, Summer Madness 2 prepared the world for what battle rap could be. The stagecraft, and the theatrics all supported by incredible writing, and the well-crafted angles designed to dissect the very essence of his opponent, Loaded Lux revolutionized the approaches and levels of attack in battle rap in more than one way. “Grey Hoodie Lux” – a nod to Lux’s attire as he issued 3 of the most dangerous rounds ever rapped – remains an iconic figure among battle rap fans and industry titans alike. In the ever-changing world of battle rap it is difficult to remain relevant as more MCs enter the game building on the foundation, but Lux not only remains relevant but one of the biggest draws the sport has to offer. Musically, his work is critically acclaimed and includes a freestyle on Hot 97 that has amassed over 4 Million views online. If battle rap was a video game, Lux is the final boss with the aura of the top-of-the-mountain battler that he is advertised to be. And as long as he stays on the court, fans will clamor and debate for who is worthy to battle the great Loaded Lux.

Math Hoffa

The DVD Era – a time when battle rap and mixtape culture aligned to produce some of the most influential content in hip-hop history – is filled with culture-shifting moments. Among them, perhaps the first viral moment can be attributed to Math Hoffa, for better or worse. A moment that unwittingly underscored the rawness of battle rap –  Math vs. Dose set the stage for the modern era of battle rap, where storylines and believability became key in a sport that was mixing talent with credibility and standing on what you rapped. Math’s influence and impact only grew and evolved from there. The T-Rex Trilogy, the classics or wins with legends such as Dizaster, Hollow da Don, and Aye Verb offered more than just a battle but had entire stories with them that cemented them as pieces of battle rap history.

Through all the controversy, Math  Hoffa all around skillset and bully-based personality cultivated a brand built on being battle rap’s ultimate survivor. Math is the first battler to flood the zone with work, taking battles at a much higher clip than many at his level at the time and providing a blueprint on how to take the game by volume. On top of a legendary battle rap career, Math has extended past battle rap creating and owning one of the most watched and critically acclaimed hip-hop podcasts – My Expert Opinion. The platform, has featured Derrick Rose, Tony Yayo, DJ Clue, and more. Math has become one of the most successful battlers out of the ring and leaves the legacy of a legend within it too.

Marv Won

Marv Won was one of the earliest outside of the East Coast to prove that talent lived outside Mecca. One of the first to have a battle on HD, he rose back around 2000 at Lush’s Wednesday open mic nights in  Hamtramck, MI. With mentors in his corner like Proof, Obie Trice, D12, and Slum Village he honed his craft to be one of the coldest with a pen. Was part of the wave of the YouTube era battling big names like Aye  Verb, Charlie Clips, Pat Stay, etc. Much respect for NWX’s K Shine and DNA, however, Marv and Quest had  one of the best 2-on-2 battles back in 2010 on Grind Time against Soul Khan & Dirtbag Dan on the Massacre of the Bay. He was selected to be on Eminem’s “Total Slaughter ” which was the first time we saw battle rap on cable TV. Speaking of Em, he even had a battle with the Legend Eminem on the “8 Mile” set which made the bonus features of the movie. EMINEM BRO!!!! In 2021 we saw him go all the way to the finals of KOTD’s  Grand Prix tournament where he battled rising star Saynt. With all that said, Marv is a battle rap treasure who  always puts his heart in his pen and is one of the best at crafting his rounds for optimum impact.

Murda Mook

“The Logo”. That’s the best and most accurate way to describe the Harlem MC who serves as a forefather for the sport, starting from the first SMACK DVD. Murda Mook’s legend started in the back alleys, barbershops, and Harlem blocks. Murda Mook became synonymous with this emerging battle rap culture appearing in battles worthy of the Library of Congress against the likes of Party Arty, Serius Jones, and Loaded Lux. These early performances shaped the career of the textbook elite battle rap career, gaining praise from greats out of the sport and bringing eyes to developing sport. Eventually, his work and music gained him a record deal with Busta Rhymes Conglomerate label.

Despite success in other ventures Murda Mook, very much like Lux, always represented the spirit of battle rap culture and also argued for battle rap’s most iconic figure. Nothing personifies that more than his legendary cypher performance that shut down BET. Now in the 3rd act of his career, Murda Mook’s ability to adapt to eras is undeniable, having 2 W’s in different settings vs the two faces of their respective battle rap generations; Tay Roc and Geechi Gotti. Whether it’s the business of battle rap or in-ring work – Murda Mook every move reflects on the foundation of the battle rap culture. The popularity, respect, and crossover appeal that battle rap now enjoys can be directly traced back to the work authored by a teenage  Murda Mook. For that same person to be regarded as not just an elder statesman but a dangerous force in battle rap is truly remarkable.

Nu Jerzey Twork

A captivating force who took the battle rap world by storm in the blink of an eye. Twork began by making waves on the DMV area battle rap scene. His performance vs Redd Handed was electric and URL came calling soon after. A rare blend of intimidation and intricacy. To command the room the way Twork can and write at the skill level he does is something out of 2K MyCareer player with the stats maxed out. Showings against high-level names like Ill Will, JC, and Aye Verb stamped him as one of the future faces of battle rap. His career hasn’t been without hiccups, but the greatness we’d seen him reach made it hard to not still believe in the potential. 2023 was a career year for him, capped off by a career-defining performance vs Murda Mook and one can only imagine Twork only goes upward from here and continues to show us that we were right to believe he was a star all along.

O'fficial

The greatest New Orleans-produced battler has served as the bridge between the 2nd and 3rd waves of Women’s Battle Rap. Starting out in the indie leagues of the South, Official made her name early by dominating against men. When her move to Queen of the Ring forced her to compete in sparring sessions against other up-and-coming MCs, she more than rose to the task. Official vs C3  represented a paradigm shift in Women’s battle rap toward lyricism, with one of not only the greatest female battles of all time but an all-time classic battle within the culture as a whole. A premier puncher, Official has tested her skills against elites like Daylyt, Rum Nitty, and Dizaster while turning in show-stealing performances such as her epic battle against Jaz the Rapper on NOME 5. O’fficial’s work has been frequently recognized by Hip-Hop Legends such as Snoop Dogg and Remy Ma. She is one of the greats in the category of punchers and a legend by all metrics.

Pat Stay

Pat Stay remained one of the most dangerous and all-around battle rappers until his untimely passing. With a defusing comedic ability, a natural born entertainer with a very sound and sometimes downright incredible writing ability – Pat Stay rocked nearly every stage he touched. His tenure as KOTD champ was vital to bringing both respect to the brand and elevating the chain itself giving it possibly the greatest reign of any champion to hold it. Pat Stay stayed true to his roots while gaining respect from all subsets of battle rap. From the small rooms to big, different countries and styles clashes – Pat Stay could adapt to any room, turning cynical stares turn into smiles with a single freestyle. In the last act of his career, he went from KOTD to URL – taking on the challenge of winning over a different segment of the culture. Like a true legend, he rose to the challenge turning in classic battles against Tay Roc and Shotgun Suge while giving  Real Sikh, a rising star at URL, a chance to showcase his skills. Pat Stay was beloved for his talent, ability to connect with diverse crowds, and for tirelessly representing his beloved Nova Scotia. There will never be another, and we are grateful for him sharing his talents with us.

Serius Jones

“J One S – the Last Great One Left” is, the signature opener from one of the earliest and longest-tenured legends, Serius Jones. His early work influenced a whole generation of battle rap. From Fight Klub classic showings against well-respected battlers like Jin to the SMACK DVD classic with Murda  Mook to Summer Madness 2 where he vs Clips gives a collection of historic moments –  Serius Jones has a supreme resume filled with culturally significant work, spanning across multiple eras and having a few great showing versus modern day top tiers. Couple that with an all-time charisma, a solid pen that is still palatable for casual audiences and an “at any moment” freestyling ability – you have an all-around skillset that gives him certain advantages given any possible matchup. Bottom line: Serius Jones in his prime is nearly as elite as any other top-tier peak you can mention. Shotty Horroh

Many battlers have put on a region or held down their state, but very few can say they put an entire country on their back. But one battler who you can say that about is Shotty Horroh, whose influence spawned an entire scene in the United Kingdom. His groundbreaking battle vs Arsonal stands up as one of the most impactful and all-time great battles. Taking place in the UK it’s one of the most if not the most international battles of all time and created a bridge between the US and UK Battle Rap scene. Creating Premier Battles which hosted elite UK talent the likes of Georgie Rootz and Shox the Rebel – Shotty Horroh cemented his legacy as the UK’s #1 battle rap legend and icon. Tay Roc

A perennial headliner, master of the stage, and the man who ran URL when all the stars vacated for other ventures, describing Tay Roc’s career as prolific feels like an understatement. T-Top

Straight outta Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, T-Top is one of the most talked about rising stars in battle rap. If there was ever an example of someone entering URL on their own accord, making their marks, and climbing the ladder to becoming the most prominent battlers in the league. T-Top is a walking example of this. Years before getting on URL, he was most known for battling and winning competitions in various small circuits and small leagues. He got on everyone’s Radar in 2010, when Top participated in a Tournament on  Arsonal’s Battle rap league, U.W/ U Dubb (Ultimate Warrior). T-Rex

A pioneer and Harlem‘s legend T-Rex has been competing in battles since the late 1990s. He shares a very influential story about his experience with Big L that changed his career forever and from that moment on tea  Rex made it his sole purpose to be one of the best. Rex has been able to transition in multiple Eras. You can find various battles of his during the DVD era not just on Smack DVD but him competing with various  Philadelphia battle rappers and multiple battles across New York City. There are countless stories of what he was able to do in the streets and in fight club and he was always regarded as one of the few people that beat Loaded Lux Back in the day. But a fast forward, during a modernization of battle rap in  2009 Rex is the first headliner of URLs’ first event against Math Hoffa when they both received one of the biggest battle rap purses at the time.

While most of Rex’s DVD peers seem to have pursued other ventures Rex decided to stay active with this new era of battle rap emerging you can see Rex travel over the  Grind Time and have a staple performance. and hit his prime in 2012 when he traveled all across the country and signed with battle rap America to have some of the most powerful and unique performances we’ve ever seen. His one-round battle versus young I’ll, One of the best porn rounders of all time.

Rex was regarded as Mr. summer madness as he was the only battle rapper to be on the first five Summer Madness cards consecutively, he went on a historic run in the year 2014 when he entered the total slaughter competition a nationally televised battle rap TV show he completely runs the table and has dominate performances throughout the entire season of the show and tournament and if it’s daylight in the tournament finals to secure the title. He remains active in battle rap to this day with multiple Summer madness and  NOMe appearances And has become the icon and face for all of the battle rappers who didn’t want to take the street/drug approach and I have some point in time if that’s the path you’re taking as a battle rapper your career will never be solidified unless you see Rex.

Tsu Surf

Throughout battle rap history, very few artists can make the transition to music and find mainstream success in both avenues. Starting in the smoky rooms of Block City in New Jersey, Tsu Surf created a legacy built on some of the most classic classics, blockbuster matches, and timeless moments. In the formative years of the URL, at the height of the Midwest Movement – the level of competition was so high, that only the best stood out. Tsu Surf’s performances against Yung Ill, Big T, and X-Factor represented the spirit of an era where regional pride superseded everything, having some of the best performances of his career in these high-pressure battles.

With big battles in small rooms under his belt – Tsu Surf began to hit the big stage where he showed his true superstar nature. Instant classics with Hitman Holla, Geechi Gotti, and Hollow Da Don in front of thousands made Tsu Surf must-see TV. Unlike many, who simply gained their respect and plateau, Tsu Surf leveraged his star power in battle rap in other avenues – creating a critically acclaimed catalog of projects including 7/25 and Newark, and founding the culture-shifting “Midnight Madness” brand along with Jakkboy Maine and Bill Collector. Surf’s contribution to battle rap is profound – generating headlines in publications normally reserved for mainstream artists,  creating viral moments during freestyle sessions such as I-95, and providing mentorship through GunTitles for emerging MCs. With an uncanny ability to sell the fight, rep the brand, and increase the ticket rate, Surf is a textbook example of how to become a successful star in the battle rap world and stretch that success beyond just battling.
